The Hot Streak No One Is Talking About

Wonder Woman Makes It 4 for 4

The MCU is better than the DCU. Marvel kicks DC’s ass. WB should be embarrassed that they can’t get the DC cinematic universe on its feet while Marvel keeps cranking out hits. This is the accepted narrative of comic book movies, particularly since DC began efforting to create an extended universe and gave Zack Snyder a lead role in building it, only problem is, it may not be true. Check out this list of numbers (they are in millions):

$116

$166

$133

$103

Those are the opening weekend grosses for all four films in the DC Extended Universe, Man of Steel, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman. Four for four over $100 million. Now, I know what you’re thinking, “surely Marvel has done that too”. Well, here’s you list:

$57 (Ant-Man)

$179 (Captain America: Civil War)

$85 (Doctor Strange)

$146 (Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2)

Huh, would you look at that.

It seems like people don’t like to talk about it, but DC, from a box office perspective, is kind of killing it. And before you start to argue that Ant-Man and Doctor Strange shouldn’t be compared to Batman and Superman I would say to you Suicide Squad. Killer Croc, Dead Shot, Harley Quinn, Captain Boomerang, El Diablo, these aren’t just second or third tier DC characters, they are third tier Batman villains and they knocked out a $133 million opening in August. The weekend after Memorial Day is generally a dead weekend too, generally dominated by the big movies that came out the weekend before, and now we have a $103 million Wonder Woman opening (I’m not even talking about the female lead/female director). You could argue both Wonder Woman and Suicide Squad were longer shots than Ant-Man or Doctor Strange and they came through.

Listen, no one is going to argue that DC has it figured out, yet, but maybe we should give them some credit. Four for four $100 million opening weekends, Marvel has never had four movies in a row go over $100, no comic book franchise has.
