Should Michael Bay Sue?

When Michael Bay was looking at his Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen did he see the future of Hollywood action movies? Clearly no critics did, because they attacked that movie mercilessly (it’s not a great movie to be sure, but really, what did you expect from a movie about alien robots and produced by a toy company?). But watch the Battleship trailer and tell me that doesn’t look EXACTLY like a Transformers movie. Cool looking machines flying in from on high, check. Everyone in the movie is tan and sweating, check. All the women are good looking and perpetually posing for unseen cameras, check. Weird machine sounds that lets us know Transformers were changing and I’m not sure what they are telling us in Battleship, check.

I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking “of course Battleship looks exactly like Transformers, it is produced by the same toy company, how does that make Transformers the future of hollywood?” Have you seen the newest Avengers trailer? Watch the end, as a giant snake/robot/alien crashes through buildings, and ask yourself what does that remind you of? Maybe the end of Transformers: Dark of the Moon when a giant alien/robot/snake thing crashes through buildings as it destroys Chicago? Look at the ships Iron Man is flying away from. Don’t they remind you a little bit of the Decepticon ships from the last Transformers?

Before Marvel fans start loosing it let me just say I don’t think this is a bad thing. For all the critical bashing that the Transformers and Michael Bay have taken over the last few years what can’t be taken away is that he has made movies that look unbelievable. So, why not copy those monstrous robotic aliens? They look amazing. Just, let’s give poor Michael Bay a little bit of love and admit we are stealing from him.
